This is where Joaquim Pinheiro de Azevedo Leite Pereira lived, the man who, in the 19th century, found the solution to stop phylloxera, the plague that almost destroyed the Douro vineyards. Its discovery saved one of the world’s most emblematic wine regions – and its memory lives on today, engraved on the walls of this three-century-old house and in the testimony of its heirs.
Today, the 8th generation of Joaquim Leite Pereira’s family continues to preserve this unique legacy and opens the doors of Casa do Bucheiro for guided tours, wine tastings and authentic wine experiences.

1863
Arrival of Phylloxera in the Douro. The devastating pest Phylloxera, an insect native to North America, appears for the first time in Portugal, in the municipality of Sabrosa, initiating a period of great destruction in the Douro vineyards.
End of the 19th century
Beginning of the Fight Against Phylloxera and Regional Leadership. Faced with the near-total destruction of vineyards, Dr. Joaquim Pinheiro (3rd generation of Casa do Bucheiro), one of the region's largest landowners, assumes a leadership role and dedicates himself to studying and implementing solutions to combat the pest.
1957
Completion of the Oenology Course Dias Teixeira completed his Oenology course at the prestigious University of Coimbra, laying the foundation for his successful career in the world of wine.
1975
Founding of the Wine Production Company Dias Teixeira founds his own wine production company, a decisive step that marks the beginning of a new era for the family's wine production at Casa do Bucheiro / Quinta do Bucheiro.
1979
Induction into the Port Wine Brotherhood On February 15, 1979, Dias Teixeira was accepted into the Port Wine Brotherhood, recognizing his dedication and passion for the wine industry and the region's most iconic wine.
Phylloxera: The Plague that Shook the Douro
In the 19th century, phylloxera, a small insect from America, arrived in Europe and quickly devastated the Douro vineyards, threatening the survival of the entire region. Lost vintages, destroyed harvests and desperate families marked one of the biggest crises in the history of wine.
It was then that Dr. Joaquim Pinheiro de Azevedo Leite Pereira made a decisive discovery that made it possible to stop the plague…
